UNB LIBRARIES

UNB Libraries has four libraries on two campuses accessible to all UNB students, including the Harriet Irving Library, the IUC Library, and the Head Hall Library in Fredericton. Throughout the academic year, UNB Fredericton Libraries are open between 102 hours per week during the first part of the term to 120 hours per week during the last five weeks of the term. Staff in Reference and Circulation Services offer exceptional frontline service to patrons in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Standard Work Hours: Shift Work | Variable Hours | 36.25 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

• Hours of work may include evenings and weekends and may be required at any of the three UNBF Libraries.
• Must have the physical stamina for lifting, standing, and bending repeatedly.

Salary Range: $25.28 - $29.92 per hour

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of Learning & Engagement, the Library Assistant PL5 supports a variety of activities required for the operation of Reference & Circulation Services within UNBF Libraries. This position will work as part of a team to ensure excellent service and smooth functioning of front-line services within the UNBF Libraries system.

• Provide reference services to students, faculty, and staff at the Research Help Desk, by email, and through instant messaging.
• Apply reference interview techniques and knowledge of print and online collections, catalogues, licensed electronic resources, and library policies.
• Assist with the organization and participate in library tours and orientations for new students.
• Troubleshoot computer and/or student copying, printing, and scanning, issues, referring more complex issues to technical support as required.
• Track and log interactions at the Research Help Desk using internal tools, ensuring accurate data for service assessment and planning.
• Assist with inputting and maintenance of general and subject specific handouts, as assigned.
• Develop and maintain digital learning objects such as specialized research guides and multimedia tutorials as required.
• Perform bibliographic checking and searching of online library catalogues, specialized collections, electronic and print catalogues of publishers and vendors when requested by librarians.
• Support special projects, including collections withdrawals.
• Deliver instructional sessions on topics such as database searching, identifying appropriate references, citation managers, etc. as required.
• Participate in library resource testing and serve on library committees, as required.
• Staff Circulation Desk, circulating materials and processing payments as required.
• Open or close library, as required.
• Attend departmental meetings and contribute to discussions.
• Perform other duties as required, including the processing and shelving of materials, hourly counts roaming-reference, office duties, etc.

WHAT YOU BRING

• University degree supplemented by at least 3 years' experience in a public service area of an academic library, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• 3-4 years of experience providing reference service in an academic library or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

• Ability to work alone with minimal supervision and as a team member.
• Ability to work with quick turnaround times and firm deadlines, and with close attention to detail.
• Experience with video editing and content management systems tools is an considered an asset.
